After getting suggestions on cool neighborhoods for eating & drinking, we found ourselves walking up to Slumberland, intrigued by its mattress-store-sounding name and the fact that it was one of the few places with lights on the block.

We were surprised to find a pretty cool bar, with sand on the floor, and a foosball table ready for action!  We later learned that sand-on-the-floor bars are on the uptick in Berlin these days, so that made a little more sense...

Beers were cold, prices were reasonable, and there was an interestingly eclectic crowd to people-watch.  Definitely a chill place to grab a drink or 3.

Quite a laid-back place with friendly service and an interesting mix of clientele - from rastas to old boys knocking back a Hells or two. It was apparently a haunt of David Bowie when he was living in the city.

Service phoned in, but who cares. Quite a diverse mix of people (small groups of gay dudes, young people on dates, middle-aged people doing after-work drinks, random old guys). Sand on the floor a bit much in my opinion but the outdoor seating right across from Winterfeldplatz is lovely. Nice and spacious without being cavernous; we went there last night with a large group and had a very nice time. The layout is pretty much perfectyou can sit at the bar, at a table (low or high), or a booth, or outside, without ever being crowded or stuck in the middle of the room. There is a kicker table and a non-smoking section. Prices were a bit high but what do you want for the area. Nice non-alk options, but they have those ,33 Club Mate bottles that I h-a-t-e for EUR2,80. 0,4 beer starts at EUR2,70 I think.
This place moves at its own pace, so leave your ideas of what a bar should be at the door and you'll have an all right time. Would definitely visit again were I already in the area.
